You cannot talk about South Carolina venue placement without the liquor liability story. A 2017 law requires $1M liquor liability for any business serving alcohol after 5 p.m.; combined with joint-and-several dram shop liability, it drove most admitted carriers out of the state and closed venues and bars across SC. Reform arrived with Act 42 (signed May 28, 2025, effective January 1, 2026): comparative fault plus mitigation credits (alcohol under 40% of revenue, service stops at midnight, server training) that can reduce the required limit. In April 2026 the SC Senate voted to suspend the $1M mandate until June 30, 2027. Carrier re-entry is expected — but premiums were still elevated in early 2026.
For venue owners (annual policies), placement is mostly program and E&S business. For one-day renters, the per-event markets remain healthy.

Real placement discussions from independent agents about wedding & event venue insurance.
Act 42 (effective Jan 1, 2026) introduced comparative fault and mitigation credits that can reduce the $1M requirement; in April 2026 the Senate voted to suspend the $1M mandate until mid-2027. Watch for admitted carrier re-entry as reform takes hold.
Specialty agritainment programs and E&S markets. The farm policy alone will not respond — events are excluded. K&K, Amwins special events, and XINSURANCE are the usual routes; agritainment-specific programs vary by state.
A one-day event policy ($1M/occurrence) naming the venue as additional insured — PHLY, Markel Event, GatherGuard, Wedsure, and WedSafe all sell these online, with host liquor available.
